South Street Caves

The South Street Caves are part of Dorking’s network of historic underground tunnels carved into the sandstone beneath the town over several centuries. Originally linked to quarrying and storage, the caves later gained associations with smugglers, secret passages and Second World War shelter use, giving them a strong sense of local folklore alongside their historical importance. Guided tours run at selected times throughout the year and offer a very different perspective on Dorking’s history from the town’s museums and countryside attractions.
